Natural Products to Fight Mosquitoes

To get rid of mosquitoes, there’s nothing like repellents like electric snowshoes, candles, insecticide-free tapes, bracelets, plants, and ultrasound devices. You can also use essential oils. However, it is not recommended for pregnant women and children. Essential oils can also be toxic.

Chemical Repellents

Chemical repellents are also effective against mosquitoes. Here is a non-exhaustive list.

DEET

DEET or diethyltoluamide is one of the most effective anti-mosquito products. Its effect lasts about 10 hours. This can vary depending on the percentage of DEET contained in the mosquito repellent. On average, it is from a rate of 40% that this product proves to be effective in fighting mosquitoes. In any case, DEET also protects you from dengue, Zika, malaria, Lyme disease and West Nile virus.

If you sleep without a blanket or wear clothing that doesn’t cover your entire body, apply a little DEET to those exposed areas. Don’t forget to put some on your face and hands. Be aware that DEET should not be used on damaged or sunburned skin. This product is available as a lotion or spray.

IR3535

Ethyl Butylacetylaminopropanoate or Ethyl Butylacetylaminopropanoate is better known as IR3535. It is an effective chemical repellent for mosquito control.

To eliminate mosquitoes in tropical areas, for example, opt for the lotion. The same is true if you are in infested, high-risk areas. There are also lotions adapted to children. It is a mosquito repellent that is not suitable for children under 6 months, pregnant women and nursing mothers.

KBR 3023

Another effective mosquito bite repellent is KBR 3023 or Icaridine. This mosquito repellent is not allowed for children under 30 months of age. It is perfect if you are going to a tropical area.

PMD

PMD is better known as citridiol or lemon eucalyptus. It is a repellent that is very suitable for tropical and temperate zones. Nevertheless, it is a product that should not be applied to pregnant women and children under 6 months.

Permethrin

Permethrin is also an effective chemical mosquito repellent. The only difference is that it is applied to fabrics or nets.

To protect yourself from mosquitoes while traveling, a fan is also effective. During the night, leave the device on. It will repel any mosquitoes that try to get close. If your room has an air conditioner, turn it on. This reduces the risk of mosquito bites. If you do not have an air conditioner or fan, just hide under the blanket.

In some areas, you should also protect yourself from mosquitoes during the day. Make sure to wear closed shoes and long-sleeved clothing.
