Travel Stories & Guide

Our lives are hectic. That’s why it’s important to start the day with a good breakfast. Are you tempted by the idea of an elaborate and original breakfast? The traditional Turkish breakfast, or kahvaltı, has it all. This complete meal includes a variety of cheeses and olives, tomatoes, cucumber, and eggs, accompanied by simit (a kind of soft doughnut-shaped bread covered with sesame seeds), marmalade, and honey, and kaymak (a whipped milk cream), small grilled sausages and Turkish pastries.

This is a good way to start the day and get your strength back before taking a guided walking tour of one of the most beautiful destinations in Turkey. For the record, if the reputation of Turkish coffee is well known, the word kahvaltı means “before coffee”, which explains why only tea is served during this breakfast. In my book, there is no better way to start our day with a good and hearty breakfast. So, without further ado, let’s dive into this blog and learn about some of the best breakfasts around the planet.

1. Japan

breakfasts

The traditional Japanese breakfast is as beautiful as it is good! It consists of a variety of fine and delicate dishes, presented with great care in small individual dishes. The portion size is misleading: this extremely balanced meal will keep you going all day. This breakfast usually includes grilled fish, steamed white rice, and miso soup. Side dishes include tsukemono (or pickled vegetables), a green salad, eggs seasoned with furikake, a Japanese condiment made of sesame, seaweed, and dried shrimp.

2. Morocco

No matter where you travel in Morocco, you will always find starchy recipes to lick your lips. Moroccans’ two favorite breakfast dishes are Bagheri, or thousand-hole pancake, a Berber pancake made from semolina, and m’semen, a flaky pancake. Both types of pancakes are presented with an assortment of marmalades, chutney, olive oil, and ghee (clarified butter) or boiled eggs. A glass of mint tea accompanies this exquisite breakfast, served in a ritualistic manner.

The boiling liquid is poured from a teapot placed high up to allow the mint leaves to unfurl and release their peppery aroma. For an extraordinary experience, why not spend the night in a tent in the Moroccan desert, either near Marrakech or in Western Sahara, to enjoy this royal breakfast while admiring the nearby dunes?

3. The United Kingdom

breakfasts

Grilled bacon, scrambled eggs, sausages, regional black pudding, baked beans, mushrooms, tomatoes, toast, and tea or coffee are the long list of ingredients that make up the typical full English breakfast. There are also many local variations, such as the Welsh full breakfast, often served with cockles and laverbread, the full Cornish breakfast with potato cakes, the full Scottish breakfast with potato scones or tatties, and the Northern Irish full breakfast- or “Ulster fry”- served with potato bread or baking soda After a breakfast like this, you’ll have your strength for the whole day!

4. Jamaica

The ackee is the national fruit of Jamaica. After boiling, it is sautéed with salt cod, chili, peppers, shallots, onions, and tomatoes. As rich in flavor as it is in color, this must-have breakfast is served throughout the island. As is often the case in Jamaican cuisine, the side dishes are as important as the main course. Try the version with roasted breadfruit, boiled green plantains, bammy (a type of cassava cake), or callaloo, a green leafy vegetable that resembles spinach.

5. Vietnam

breakfasts

Whether your stay is planned in a bustling metropolis like Ho Chi Minh City or the bucolic landscapes of Sa Paù, you will often see locals enjoying a phô for breakfast. Why? Certainly because many restaurants or street stalls serving phô close for the day as early as 10 am.

This fragrant soup is based on a clear beef or chicken broth served with fresh herbs, rice noodles, and minced meat or vegetables. The secret of phô lies entirely in the low-temperature cooking of its rich broth, which must simmer for hours to obtain its unique flavor. Every street vendor, restaurant owner, or homemaker has their recipe.
